The Vikings appeared in Ireland for the first time in the year 795. During the first period of their arrival the Vikings generally attacked and plundered Irish monasteries and returned home with the spoils. From 840AD Vikings started settlements in Waterford, Wexford, Cork, Limerick and Dublin (Irish: Dubh Linn; "Black Pool"). During this period they settled amongst the Irish, introduced currency and made Ireland the centre of trade in europe.
